Whenever I visit somebody I have a habit of looking through their bookshelves and hunt gems Having several free days to spend the Easter, my gf gave me a few books I haven t read but which she grew up with You know the ones I m talking about old, tattered and smelling of vanilla, they are some of your first reads and hook you into wanting and , transforming your library in a magical portal and freeing your imagination You then grow up, move out from your parents home and forget about them while not really forgetting the first emotions you felt when starting to read And then at some point you remember they exist and reread them once every few years, trying to rekindle the bittersweet lingering remnants of past childhood.Or is it just me who does this No Ok, good This is the first I picked up Written in 1932 I think this is the oldest Romanian children s book using magical realism but I m not an expert so I might be wrong. The author tells the story of a little girl who travels using a magical saphire talisman gifted to her by the empress of the forest in exchange for saving one of her beloved subjects.Besides giving her beauty and wisdom the talisman also bends time and space, allowing her to visit the past. The story unfolds as the girl, together with a helping midget, travel in time and assist at events unfolding through ancient Egypt, France and several events in the history of Romania.Moral teachings are intertwined with nationalism and a pretty accurate depiction of historical events I looked some of them up to make sure.In this version of the book published in the 80s, the artwork is just beautiful and the complexity of the narrative makes me wish I d had it as a child as I was pretty disappointed after reading some folktales and seeing the same relatively simple story unfolding. The rating implies you still have the ability to read as you did when you were a child.Which are the childhood books you grew up with

Am citit o cu drag cand am fost mica Iar astazi am recitit o cu mai mult drag, incat pe langa povestioare, acum printre paginile cartii se afla si copilaria mea, iar amintirea acelor zile mi a adus un zambet melancolic pe buze.
